Melissa McGill (b. 1969) is an interdisciplinary artist known for colossal, site-specific public projects that explore the relationship between humanity and the natural world. Often collaborating with local communities, she creates art across a range of mediums that heightens people’s awareness of their surroundings. Her recent project Red Regatta filled Venice’s waterways with 52 sailboats—each hoisted with a hand-painted, unique red sail—celebrating the city’s maritime history and calling attention to the threat of climate change. With warmth and a contagious spirit, McGill has the unique ability to not only bring her ambitious dreams to life, but make you dream with her.
